The California diet also known as the Californian Diet or even the Sonoma Diet, is closely related to the Mediterranean diet with a few differences.  The Californian diet was developed by Dr. Connie Guttersen, a registered dietitian.  The California diet has a focus of fresh fruit and vegetables — much like the Mediterranean diet. One of the major differences of the California diet is that it has phases or cycles.

Phase 1 or Wave 1 typically lasts 10 days — during this cycle you will focus on losing weight. Your diet during this phase will be 25% grain and 75% protein.

Phase 2 or Wave 2 can last a couple of weeks or even a few months. During this phase you will be slowing your weight loss momentum down a little but still maintaining a consistent amount of weight loss. You will begin to introduce more foods in to your diet at this point as well.
